BIOGRAPHY:
As smart as she is athletic, Park City native Alexa Deveraux divides her off-snow time between studying biomedical engineering at the University of Utah and giving back to her roots, coaching young gymnasts. On the hill, she is quickly becoming a force in aerials: three NorAm podiums in 2011 led up to a third place performance at U.S. Championships at only her second appearance at the event.
ALEXA SAYS:
Being named to the U.S. Ski Team felt like the culmination of my athletic career. Such an incredible amount of hard work, dedication, tears, joy and support from so many people have gone into my athletics that all I could do was shed a silent tear and smile as I received the news from Todd Ossian. I can’t help but think back to watching the 2002 Olympics here in Salt Lake City and wearing a pair of U.S. Ski Team gloves and that so sought after red and blue Roots beret, beaming from ear to ear just wearing them, never having a thought in my mind that I would hold the honor of being a member on the Team. I feel like the world has opened with opportunity and I cannot wait to get to work.
FIRST TRACKS:
Like most Park City locals, Devereaux was on skis shortly after she could walk. She built a foundation for aerials as a competitive artistic gymnast and tumbler for 12 years. After a chance encounter with an old gymnastics coach now evolved with aerials, she was nudged toward aerials. “I went to a Saturday showing of the Flying Ace All-Stars Show at the Utah Olympic Park to see what it was all about and signed up for a summer introduction camp with Fly Freestyle right then and there,” she says. “I took to my roots in skiing and love for the snow and was hooked from day one.”
OFF THE SNOW:
Away from the snow, Alexa has a multitude of things she loves to do. She loves learning and currently plans on graduating from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and beyond. She has been coaching where her athletic roots began, at Black Diamond Gymnastics, and loves watching a younger generation of gymnasts grow and develop not only as athletes, but as people. She also loves to paint and draw as well as spend time with her friends and family especially her little brother, Cole.
